Finding My True Calling: A Journey from Social Work to Holistic Healing

Published on 7 March 2025 at 10:05

As a teenager and in my early twenties, I imagined a quiet life—one filled with plants, animals, and peace. I dreamed of living in Machalí, the little town in Chile where I come from, embracing a simple yet fulfilling existence. But beyond that peaceful dream, I always felt a deep, unshakable need to help others. This calling led me to study social work, hoping to make a real difference in people’s lives.

However, as I entered the field, reality struck. I quickly realized how difficult it was to secure funding to create meaningful change for thousands of people in need. My passion for helping others turned into frustration and disappointment as bureaucracy and financial constraints made real impact seem almost impossible.

Disillusioned with my chosen career, I found myself working in various jobs, yet no matter where I was, one thing remained constant—my people skills stood out. I could easily talk to, understand, and empathize with people. The desire to be useful, to uplift the soul and spirit of those who needed understanding, never left me.

As life went on, I started learning on my own about the benefits of massage. I was fascinated by how ancient these techniques were and how profoundly they could heal the body, mind, and spirit. The more I learned, the more I felt drawn to this practice. But as an immigrant, my dreams of pursuing this passion seemed almost impossible. I had no clear path to follow, no resources to turn to.

Still, I held onto hope. I asked the universe, God, or whatever force was guiding me—if this was truly my path, then show me a way. And the universe answered.

The school where I was studying aged care unexpectedly went bankrupt, leaving me with the opportunity to change my studies. When my agent listed the available options, the first course they mentioned was aromatherapy. I took it as a sign. Without hesitation, I enrolled.

From the moment I started my studies, I knew—I was meant to do this. My teacher, Kaye, opened my eyes to the power of aromatherapy and holistic healing. It was more than a profession; it was my purpose. Everything I had ever loved—helping people, understanding their emotions, working with natural elements—came together in this path. Kaye, a true guide with over 30 years of experience, enchanted me. Her passion and knowledge inspired me to explore all the senses of the human being. Later on, I met Claire, who has also dedicated many years to this practice and has educated countless individuals in the art of natural healing. Their wisdom and mentorship reinforced my belief that I was exactly where I needed to be.

Now, as I run Sol Soul Holistic Therapy, I see how everything led me here. Every struggle, every doubt, and every unexpected turn was guiding me to my true calling. My journey has taught me that sometimes, we don’t choose our path—it chooses us.

And when it does, all we have to do is trust and take the first step.

With love and gratitude,
Francisca
